According to industry news, Google and Amazon are working closely on this venture and the companies are targeting a Q4 release with Ice Cream Sandwich on board. Amazon is believed to have outsourced development of the software environment to an embedded systems specialist which will develop a distinctive Amazon flavored UI for the new range.

According to a report from investment firm Detwiler Fenton, Amazon’s rumored tablet “Hollywood” will come with free streaming video service and be priced at around $399, where they’d leverage from their Video rental services, while maintaining the Kindle 4 as a dedicated eReader.

Quanta “has recently received orders from Amazon for its reported tablet PC,” Taiwanese tech journal DigiTimes reported, citing unnamed sources from “upstream components makers.” The notebook maker will deliver from 700,000 to 800,000 units of the rumored Amazon tablet a month “during the peak season,” the sources said, and pull in more than $3.5 billion in the deal.

The Amazon tablet will reportedly sport a 10 inch screen and “a more robust applications processor” than what will be on the Kindle 4 that Amazon might very well launch by the end of 2011. The Kindle 4 could also sport a 10-inch screen with color. Perhaps a touch-screen too, to compete the newer rivals like Nook Touch and Kobo Touch. According to DigiTimes, Amazon will slash Kindle 3 prices when it releases the tablet.

Amazon will be pitting its own extensive content assets against Apple’s iTunes and Apps Store to compete with Apple that still accounts for 80% of the tablet market.

According to Detwiler Fenton, the tablet market could become segregated on price ranges with color eReaders in the “low-end tablet niche,” the sub-$400 tablets such as Amazon’s Hollywood, and then the more expensive tabs such as the iPad 2.

Amazon has been leading with the Kindle for some time and with low priced color eReaders running on Android, Kindle 4 has the potential to cancel out B&N’s advantage with Nook Color.
